Phil West Goes East
Phil West has just returned from an epic 3,181 mile bike ride that took him from Roehampton in London to the Asian side of Istanbul in just 2 months all in the name of raising money for the Global Alliance for Rabies Control, a charity that is close to his heart. We caught up with Phil to find out how he got on…
Which country did you enjoy the most? I think Montenegro was my favourite country due to the incredible landscapes of mountains, canyons and forests, the weather was good too! Bosnia was also a highlight.
Were there any moments you wanted to turn back? Being chased by scary dogs almost on a daily basis was tough. Having to push my bike up a mountain in Albania for the best part of 5 hours as it was so steep wasn’t fun either. Cycling on some of the scariest roads I’ve ever been on especially in Kosovo and entering Istanbul. There was also one night I had wild dogs growling and barking inches from my tent in Greece. Looking back they’re all good memories though.
What were the best moments? The incredible views riding above the clouds in Greece, various wild camping spots such as on the beach in Albania. Hiking the Macedonian mountains with a puppy that followed me for 7 miles, and of course all the long downhill sections were a cyclist’s dream.
What made you take on the challenge? It’s something that’s been on my mind for a while and I want to have lived my life knowing that I have achieved something that will stay with me forever. I love to travel and cycling is one of the best ways you can see a country.
It’s always makes us happy to hear that our models have gotten married, however it’s even better when they’re both part of the SR family. We wish Laura & Aaron all the best for the future and look forward to seeing those honeymoon snaps soon!
